Jeb's Waffles and Ribs May be Opening as "Jeb's Hill-Country Cooking?" Print E-mail

Jeb's Waffles and RibsSonora, Ca -- As the only media outlet in Tuolumne County to have been actually following the restaurant's slow crawl toward viability, Sierrabear is pleased to see that the real reporters at the Union Democrat are finally paying attention to what may be the end of a long and mysterious process, reporting in the July 17th edition, "You read it here first: The long-dormant Sonora restaurant is going to open, and soon."

Apparently, it's true this time. Jeb's may truly be opening it's doors soon. According to the article published in the Union Democrat by reporter Chris Bateman, the long wait is finally - maybe - over, though the name we've all come to associate with the mystery restaurant, "Jeb's Waffles and Ribs", may actually be know in the future as the oh-so-quaint "Jeb's Hill Country Cooking." With a name like that, maybe squirrel meat will be on the menu. One can only assume that the waitress  will be wearing some some sort of costume-like, country-kitchen style garb - think Laura Ingalls. Will there be banjo music piped in? What do people cook and eat in "Hill Country?" Pine cone soup anyone?

Sierrabear is delighted to see that the establishment is finally opening its doors. Though, as excited as we are, we are equally crushed by the name's disappointing lack of originality . Chick Brooks, the owner of numerous chain restaurants most likely knows what he's doing. At age 81, he been in the business for some time, but come-on, Mr. Brooks, that was a great name.

Tuolumne County needs the jobs, so even with all the pros and cons, we aren't ones to look a gift horse in the mouth, even if that horse will be on the menu.

I think that the tone of the article as it relates to sonora, and the people who
live here is rather rude and inappropriate. I think that whatever they decide
to name it has no relevance to what the waitresses will wear or what music they
will play, and I find it rather offensive that you would suggest it. Just
becuase we are a small town in the foothills doesn't mean that we are reckless
hillbillies as you suggest.

I could not find any reference or implication in my article regarding 'reckless
hillbilliess.' Besides, I've lived in Tuolumne County for a majority of my life,
so to say that I was criticizing the locals in this article is highly
inaccurate. In fact I was poking fun at the name choice of Chick Brooks (owner
of Jeb's), a multi-millionaire chain-restaurateur from the valley who presumes
to know what we eat up here in "hill country."

And have you seen the
inside yet.? It\\\'s like a set from Bonanza. Hill country my ass.
Anyway, if you took offense, I do apologize. BTW the
\\\"offensive\\\" parts are what are known in my
part of Tuolumne County as sarcasm.

And even if you still disagree,
Sierrabear very much appreciates your comments. Keep us on our toes!
