Why did Tuolumne General Hospital Really Close? Print E-mail

Editor's note: Here's the outspoken Domenic Torchia commenting on a Union Democrat article "County To forgive $630k in bad debt."

For years, some of us have been preaching that TGH was closed because of incompetent County Supervisors. Now the truth is finally out. A bit smug-"the hospital would have gotten 30 cents on the dollar." Well, that is about $3.3 million, a sizable sum for a County that is broke. And $11,000,000 now you are talking some serious money, at least for some of us. All those employees laid off, why, because the Board of Supervisors failed to do their job.
Now here is the clue, the Board hired two very expensive consultants. They took over everything. Their job was to make
sure the hospital failed. Here is what one of the two is doing: "In the Columbia Journalism Review, Trudy Lieberman, president of AHCJ’s board of directors, scolded journalists for not mentioning that Lewin Group, the consultants who released a recent study claiming that a public insurance option would cost doctors and hospitals money, is ultimately part of a major insurance company." These guys are frauds.

Lewin Group and Camden, saw to it that TGH failed, after all, there is no money for the industry from a County Hospital. The Board sold us out, they let our Hospital close. They claim that SRMC is doing the job. A great deal of evidence to the contrary. But that story is evolving and must be looked at another day. But right now, tell us how much is Tuolumne County, the Feds and the State paying SRMC for "taking care of our people?"

I believe that there should be a full accounting of what went on in Tuolumne County health care. There still appears to be some doubt as to whether the Board properly used funds from things like cigarette taxes. This $11,000,000 dollar loss was because Lewin and Camden ran a business office that did no business. The empirical evidence is just now coming to light. Now the UD, and others can just say, "it is water under the bridge." I hope you all have more integrity than that.

I want you to ask, how much did TC Board pay for the advisors who so incompetently ran TGH into the ground? I believe this goes beyond incompetence however, it would be interesting to see what our Grand Jury thinks of this whole situation. After all, it is there job to look out for us, and if $11,000,000 is missing, wouldn't it be their job to investigate and report?

Walt, ya got a huge story here if you want to work it. There are people in TC who would be willing to talk, all you have to do is call them. Try Chuck Wagner in Mi-Wuk, he always impressed me as being someone who had the picture. Ask for people to tell their story, that always works.

Domenic

BTW-ALL County hospitals run red ink, that is their job-to take care of people who cannot take care of themselves. That is what we pay taxes for, to provide for the "general welfare." After all, how much money are we going to make off the quarter billion we are going to spend on the L &JC? Now there are millions being pissed away.
